INTERESTING FACT:
Why is the clone Dolly named Dolly?
She was made from breast tissue so scientists named her after large breasted, Dolly Parton.

6. Ethical Issues
Some people believe cloning is wrong because, in a way, it is like playing God. If a couple is infertile, cloning would be a way to give them children. Some people don’t believe that it is right to create plants or animals in way other than how God intended it. One use of cloning that many groups as well as individuals have thought isn’t ethical, is using cloning to bring back animals or people who have died. It is thought that a boundary has to be set for when humans have to stop and let nature do its role. The question that many are asking is where is the boundary for humans to stop playing God.

5. Examples
- Dolly the sheep was the first mammal to be cloned, from a cell taken from an adult animal. Dolly’s cells weren’t strong enough because the adult sheep was too old
- After Dolly, yeast were cloned
- The most recent animals to be cloned were mice. Most mice to be cloned ended up dying from diseases.

4. Uses
Cloning can be used to help repopulate endangered species. If there aren’t enough members of a species to repopulate, cloning can be an alternative to reproduction. You could also use a clone to bring extinct animals, like woolly mammoths. Some people are interested in cloning because it could help bring back people who have died, if you can preserve their cells. Another way cloning is used is the cloning of organs. Rather than extracting organs from a human, scientists can simply create organs.

3. History
The first cloned animals were cloned in the late 1800 and early 1900’s Hans Spemman and Hans Dreisch attempted to clone animals but they were both unsuccessful. In 1951, a team of scientists in Philadelphia used nuclear transplant to clone a frog embryo. Nuclear transplant is still used today. The first cloned mammal was cloned in 1986. It was a sheep named Dolly who was the first cloned from an adult. Since Dolly, only mice have been successfully cloned.

2. Description
A Clone is an exact replica of an original organism. It is a direct copy of DNA. Scientists are interested in clones because they can help repopulate endangered species and because they are exactly the same we can use them for studying and experiments. Clones could also help us to make body parts that humans need to survive. For example, if a person needs a new heart or kidney, they can take one from a clone.
